Breast feeding is known to be better for the baby than formula milk, and in fact is less complicated than heating water and making up feeds. However, breastfeeding is not always as naturally easy as you would imagine. The right advice and support at the right time can make all the difference, and can give confidence especially when dealing with a baby that may not initially get the hang of breast feeding.

Breastfeeding support is available from the hospital, midwives and health visitors. Breastfeeding consultants and lactation consultants have a hiuge amount of training in supporting mothers to breastfeed and gives you skilled advice and personal attention. This can contribute to making breast feeding easier and more enjoyable for you and your baby.

In our experience (The Maternity Network) a good breastfeeding support person will not touch, massage or interfere with you or your baby during a feed and instead gives you the information specific to you and your baby, watch a full feed to notice any small problems and help YOU to tweak or change the technique slightly to enable you to breastfeeding happily. Breastfeeding should NEVER be painful, sometimes the smallest change makes ALL the difference.
