Heartburn

Heartburn
This is a common pregnancy complaint that tends to strike in the second and third trimester as your baby moves further up your uterus. It’s caused by the pregnancy hormone progesterone, which has a relaxing effect on the stomach valve, allowing excess acids to escape, giving you that uncomfortable burning feeling in your chest and throat.

Suggestions from the Maternity Network:

  • Eat little and often.
  • Chew your food s-l-o-w-l-y and avoid meals that seem to make heartburn worse (usually fatty, fried or spicy food).
  • You should also avoid tight clothes – particularly those oh-so-flattering pink Lycra leggings – and don’t eat close to bedtime.
  • If the problem persists and you can’t find a natural solution, an antacid may help – though always check with your doctor first before taking any medication.
  • Ginger.
  • Peppermint.
  • Small meals.
  • Avoid citrus and strong flavours such as garlic and onions.

Suggestions from experienced mums:

  • Glass of Gavisgon, anyone? I drank this straight from the bottle, Cheers!
