Suggestions from the Maternity Network:

  • Add fruit and fibre in your diet.
  • Water, water, water! Let this be your new mantra. Drink as much as you can bear.
  • Regular exercise will support your body’s continuation of moving it all round!
  • Perhaps cut down on carbohydrates in your diet like rice, pasta, bread etc or switch over to the wholemeal stuff.
  • Garlic tablets before bedtime. There’s nothing quite like pungent breath as you’re turning in with your loved one. Just try and refrain from belching where possible.
  • Gently massage your tummy in a clockwise direction (you don’t have to simultaneously pat your head either, only if you really feel the urge, then please feel free). Use some vegetable oil such as organic Grapeseed or Sunflower oil so not to cause friction on your tummy. Even contemplate starting up your own massage parlour if you’re that good.

Suggestions from experienced mums:

  • Prunes/apricots/figs. Try not to overdo it on these – there’s nothing worse than an over-enthusiastic bowel, least of all when you're pregnant. Start off with 3-5 of one or the other (that’s pieces, not bags by the way - Or kilos!).
