Breech or transverse baby

Breech or transverse baby
This means your baby is laying bum or feet down, head up at the top of your tummy. There are a number of reasons why your baby may be breech; they have got confused about which direction they should be going, as some men would argue, pretty much in like women drivers! You may have a heart shaped or tilted womb which means baby is more comfortable that way and cannot turn round.

If you’re less that 37 weeks, there’s still time for baby to turn and you can follow the suggestions below. You may be able to have an External Cephalic Version (ECV). When you book in, you may need a scan to check the position and where the cord is, although if it’s too close to baby’s neck, they may not do it on that occasion. Let’s be honest here – this procedure isn’t the most comfortable in the world, but the more relaxed you are, the better. The outcomes could be one of a number: It will work and everything will be fine, you may go into spontanious labour, it may be unsuccessful and you’ll go into labour.
Whatever happens, your baby’s birth will not be far away, prepare yourself and get all the information.

Suggestions from the Maternity Network:

  • Optimal foetal positioning – get onto your hands and knees, place your knees behind your hips, collapse down onto your elbows so that your bottom is in the air and your head down. Called the Polar Bear technique, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s something we found on a fitness DVD.
  • Tilt your pelvis or for those of you who are more flexible, lie upside down. Put your bottom on lots of pillows. Think of England!
  • Acupuncture and moxibustion can be very effective.
  • Sleep and spend time during the day lying on your left side.
  • Visualisation (it’s all about mind over matter, they say).
  • Don’t slouch whatsoever ’ sit straight or stand straight up, rocking your hips from side to side.
