Bleeding gums

Bleeding gums
The old saying ‘you lose a tooth for every child’ during pregnancy is not far off the mark! It is indeed the case that gums can become inflamed, swollen and bleed as a result of increased progesterone and blood supply. Some women also experience nosebleeds for this same reason, even if they’ve never suffered from them before. Or, they may have just walked into a lamppost!

Suggestions from the Maternity Network:

  • Take care of your teeth by brushing after meals and flossing daily.
  • Avoid sugary foods and drinks.
  • Seek advice from your dentist (although we recommend that you keep the subject to teeth, as we can’t guarantee him knowing why your car engine is making a spluttering noise). You can’t have X-rays during pregnancy but any treatment is free and only expires when your baby reaches their first birthday.
