Windy Baby
During feeding, air can become trapped due to excess air being swallowed as your baby sucks, although breast fed babies tend to have fewer problems with painful wind than those that are bottle fed as air doesn't normally come through the nipple. however, if your baby is breastfed and is windy see your breastfeeding clinic advisor (counsellor) as they may help change your positioning or latch to prevent air getting in. Especially if your baby makes any noises whilst breastfeeding.
If you are bottle feeding and your baby is windy you could try changing bottle to an anti-colic bottle with a valve.

Natural remedies to try at home
- Try feeding your baby in an upright position, giving smaller feeds more often and avoiding lying down flat sit on their backs straight after a feed. Take feeding breaks to help the baby bring up any wind and massaging their tummy area to also help. Some find that gripe water soothes the uncomfortable feeling in the tummy.
- Colic may be a possibility if your baby consistently finds it difficult to bring up wind after a feed and becomes particularly distressed. Various treatments are available which are designed to break the painful air bubbles down into smaller bubbles in the tummy that are more easily passed through burps or hiccups, but always see your doctor first.
- Massage your baby’s tummy in a clockwise direction
If you are bottlefeeding:
- Ensure your baby is winding correctly after every feed - put both of their arms over your shoulder to keep the oesophagus straight giving wind the best opportunity to come up.
- To reduce wind when bottle-feeding your baby, ensure the bottle is sufficiently tilted so that the milk completely covers the opening of the teat – this will prevent them from taking gulps of air with the milk.
