Windy Baby

Wind caused by excess air becoming trapped in the stomach. Although it can be extremely uncomfortable for your baby, it isn't dangerous or harmful to them. It really varies from baby to baby; some babies suffer with severe wind whilst others don't suffer at all.

During feeding, air can become trapped due to excess air being swallowed as your baby sucks, although breast fed babies tend to have fewer problems with painful wind than those that are bottle fed as air doesn't normally come through the nipple. however, if your baby is breastfed and is windy see your breastfeeding clinic advisor (counsellor) as they may help change your positioning or latch to prevent air getting in. Especially if your baby makes any noises whilst breastfeeding.
If you are bottle feeding and your baby is windy you could try changing bottle to an anti-colic bottle with a valve.

Babies who have tongue tie can be very windy. read our articles and information on tongue tie
