Wind In Baby

Wind in Baby
No, not the kind that blows through the trees; we mean the embarrassing problem we’ve all been known to suffer from, caused by excess air becoming trapped in the stomach. Although it can be extremely uncomfortable for your baby, it isn't dangerous or harmful to them. It really varies from baby to baby; some babies suffer with severe wind whilst others don't suffer at all.

During feeding, air can become trapped due to excess air being swallowed as your baby sucks, although breast fed babies tend to have fewer problems with painful wind than those that are bottle fed.

Suggestions from The Maternity Network:

  • Try feeding your baby in an upright position, giving smaller feeds more often and avoiding lying down flat on their backs straight after a feed. Take feeding breaks to help the wee one bring up any wind and massaging their tummy area to also help. Some find that gripe water sooths the uncomfortable feeling in the tummy.
  • Colic may be a possibility if your baby consistently finds it difficult to bring up wind after a feed and becomes particularly distressed. Various treatments are available which are designed to break the painful air bubbles down into smaller bubbles in the tummy that are more easily passed through burps or hiccups, but always see your doctor first.
  • Massage your baby’s tummy in a clockwise direction
  • If you are already bottlefeeding:

  • Ensure your baby is winding correctly after every feed
  • To reduce wind when bottle-feeding your baby, ensure the bottle is sufficiently tilted so that the milk completely covers the opening of the teat – this will prevent them from taking gulps of air with the milk. Also try changing your bottle to a brand that reduces air like Doctor Brown.
