Colic
No one knows how or why babies get colic. Some are born with it and sometimes I think it’s diagnosed all too quickly nowadays. Is your baby hungry or wanting to suck? They are very different needs but the same rooting or crying reflexes tend to come into play. Your baby’s cry might be a consistent cry of pain, in which case it’s extremely hard to tell if your baby is just hungry or tired.
Complementary therapies that might help a baby who has colic or tummy pain: Baby massage, cranial osteopath, breastfeeding counsellor, cranial sacral therapy, aromatherapy, homeopathy, baby yoga, baby reflexology.
Natural Remedies to try at home
- Get yourself to a breast-feeding clinic. Check the latch and ask their advice about how often and how to feed your baby. Check your baby is feeding enough, perhaps try expressing a little. Colic could be caused by a baby taking in ir whilst feeding if the latch is incorrect.
- Eat regularly – perhaps your milk is low on richness in the afternoon and junior is hungry. Add lots of protein into your diet.
- Fennel tea seems to help some women to get good milk, although for some this may be rather an acquired taste.
- Massage your baby’s tummy in a clockwise direction.
- Ensure your baby is winded correctly after every feed - see a baby massage/yoga instructor for tips.
- Get a trouble shooter over to help break the cycle of pain, routine, sleep and feeding
