Baby Colds
These are common. There are many solutions to try when your baby is unwell with a cough, cold or stuffy nose.
Complementary therapies that might help a baby who's coldy: Baby massage, aromatherapy, baby products/retail.
Natural remedies to try at home
- It will pass, so hold on
- Watch for any rashes and get it checked if they have one.
- Ask your healthvisitor or GP if you're concerned.
- NHS Direct are fabulous with a baby under 1
- For chest relief, lay your baby on their tummy and let your wrists go limp and relaxed. Tap with your hands confidently around the back of their chest (your baby may spit up or vomit if they are very chesty but tis better out than in).
- Massage your baby’s toes for Reflexology sinus relief.
- Put a bowl of boiling water in their room to moisten the air so it’s not too dry (be careful where you put this!)
- Get one of those nasal suckers (one with a filter!).
- Use baby nasal drops to soften hardened snot (saline drops from a pharmacy or your GP)
- Allow your little ’un to sleep as much as they want, even if this means copious amounts of Zzzzzzz during the day.
- Don’t force food down them if they’re not hungry; they won’t starve. It’s similar to when you’re unwell when the last thing you want to do is face a plate of nosh.
- Raise the top of their mattress 45 degrees
- Put a tissue with 1 drop of tea tree essential oil on it in their room. Remember to remove this when you go to bed. Always consult a practitioner in aromatherapy first.
- Put some vaseline around their nose so it doesn’t get sore, as well as on their chin. It acts as a great mucus and dribble protector!
